Generative Engine Optimization for E-Commerce: A GEO Case Study

E-commerce GEO audit showing a 92 out of 100 AI search readiness score

Search is rapidly evolving. Customers are no longer discovering products only through traditional Google search results. They are also using Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI-powered platforms to research products, compare options, and make purchasing decisions.

I am currently working on the SEO and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) of an e-commerce website. The main objective is to make the website technically accessible, machine-readable, trustworthy, and easier for AI-powered search systems to understand and potentially reference.

This case study presents the website’s current GEO audit results, the ongoing optimization work, and an important lesson about preparing websites for AI search.

What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization is the process of improving a website so that generative AI systems can crawl, interpret, understand, summarize, and potentially cite its content.

Traditional SEO commonly focuses on organic rankings, keywords, backlinks, technical performance, and search traffic. GEO builds upon these foundations by also focusing on:

  • AI crawler accessibility
  • Machine-readable website structure
  • Structured data and entity information
  • Clear and quotable content
  • Trust and E-E-A-T signals
  • Consistent brand information
  • AI search readiness

SEO and GEO should not be treated as competing strategies. Effective GEO normally begins with strong technical SEO, useful content, clear website architecture, and trustworthy business information.

Current GEO Audit Results

The e-commerce website achieved an overall GEO audit score of 92 out of 100.

Overall GEO Score: 92/100
AI Crawler Access: 100
Machine Readability: 96
Structured Data: 82
Content and Citability: 89
Trust and E-E-A-T: 91

These results indicate that the website already has a strong technical and structural foundation.

AI crawlers can access the website, the content is largely machine-readable, and the site demonstrates strong trust signals. However, the audit also identified opportunities for improvement, particularly in structured data, content citability, entity signals, and internal linking.

Understanding the GEO Audit Scores

AI Crawler Access: 100

The website is accessible to relevant search engine and AI crawlers.

This is important because an AI system cannot understand or reference content that it cannot access. Robots directives, page accessibility, indexability, canonical tags, and technical restrictions must therefore be reviewed carefully.

A perfect crawler-access score provides a strong starting point, but accessibility alone does not guarantee inclusion in AI-generated answers.

Machine Readability: 96

The website’s structure and content are easy for machines to process and interpret.

Clear headings, logical content structure, descriptive product information, semantic HTML, internal linking, and organized page layouts help search engines and AI systems understand relationships between products, categories, topics, and entities.

Structured Data: 82

Structured data represents one of the largest opportunities for improvement in this project.

For an e-commerce website, relevant structured data may help machines understand:

  • Products
  • Prices
  • Availability
  • Ratings and reviews
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Organization information
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Website identity
  • Product categories

The goal is not simply to add more schema markup. The markup must accurately represent the visible content and remain consistent with the information shown to users.

Content and Citability: 89

AI platforms are more likely to understand content that is clear, direct, specific, well structured, and easy to summarize.

Content citability can be improved by providing:

  • Direct answers to common questions
  • Clear product descriptions
  • Accurate product specifications
  • Helpful product comparisons
  • Concise definitions
  • Buying guidance
  • Evidence-supported claims
  • Descriptive headings
  • Relevant frequently asked questions

The website already performs well in this area, but some product, category, and informational pages can be made more useful and reference-friendly.

Trust and E-E-A-T: 91

Trust is particularly important for e-commerce websites.

Customers, search engines, and AI systems need to understand who operates the website, whether the business is legitimate, and whether its information can be trusted.

Important trust signals include:

  • Accurate business information
  • Detailed About and Contact pages
  • Clear shipping and return policies
  • Secure payment information
  • Consistent brand details
  • Customer service information
  • Authentic customer reviews
  • Transparent product information
  • Author or reviewer information

Ongoing SEO and GEO Work

Based on the audit findings, I am currently working across several key areas.

1. Technical SEO

The technical foundation is being reviewed to ensure that important pages remain crawlable, indexable, fast, and correctly structured.

This includes reviewing status codes, canonical tags, XML sitemaps, crawl paths, duplicate pages, internal links, page performance, and other technical signals that may affect traditional search and AI-powered discovery.

2. Schema Optimization

Existing structured data is being reviewed for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.

The focus is on implementing relevant schema types and ensuring that the markup accurately reflects the information visible on each page.

3. Content Citability

Important product, category, and informational pages are being improved so that their content is easier for AI systems to extract, summarize, and potentially reference.

This involves adding clearer answers, better definitions, concise page summaries, useful supporting details, descriptive headings, and relevant factual information.

4. Entity Signals

AI systems need to understand the entities connected to a website.

For this project, that includes strengthening signals related to the business, brand, products, product categories, services, and relevant industry topics.

Consistent information across the website and trusted external platforms may help reduce ambiguity and improve entity recognition.

5. Internal Linking

Internal links help users, search engines, and AI systems discover related content and understand how different pages are connected.

The internal linking structure is being improved to create clearer relationships between product pages, category pages, buying guides, blog posts, FAQs, and supporting informational content.

6. AI Search Readiness

The broader objective is to ensure that the website provides clear, accurate, trustworthy, and well-organized information that AI systems can confidently understand.

This includes reviewing how effectively the website communicates its brand identity, product information, expertise, topical relevance, and trustworthiness.

Key GEO Insight

A strong GEO score does not guarantee visibility in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or other generative AI platforms.

A GEO audit score is an indicator of readiness, not a promise of inclusion or citation.

AI-generated answers may be influenced by:

  • Query relevance
  • Content quality
  • Website authority
  • Content freshness
  • Topical context
  • Brand recognition
  • Supporting third-party sources
  • Search engine indexes
  • The platform’s retrieval and citation systems

However, a strong GEO score demonstrates that the website is accessible, well structured, machine-readable, trustworthy, and easier for AI systems to understand.

These qualities can improve the website’s potential to be discovered, interpreted, summarized, and referenced.

Why GEO Is an Ongoing Process

Generative Engine Optimization should not be treated as a one-time checklist.

Websites change, product information changes, competitors publish new content, search engines update their systems, and generative AI platforms continue to evolve.

GEO therefore requires ongoing work, including:

  • Monitoring crawler accessibility
  • Maintaining structured data
  • Updating important content
  • Improving product and category information
  • Strengthening entity consistency
  • Developing trust signals
  • Reviewing brand visibility in AI platforms
  • Testing how products and services appear in AI-generated answers

Final Thoughts

This project demonstrates that strong SEO foundations and GEO readiness are closely connected.

The current score of 92/100 is a positive result, but the real value of the audit is not the number itself. Its value comes from identifying where the website is already strong and where further improvements can create better visibility, clarity, and trust.

As AI-powered search continues to develop, businesses should focus on becoming reliable sources of structured, accurate, consistent, and genuinely useful information.

That is the foundation of both sustainable SEO and effective Generative Engine Optimization.
